What Do Dental Implants Look Like?

With changing technology, dental implants have become a go-to alternative to some other procedures. Dental implants work by replacing missing teeth as well as keeping prosthetics, like dentures, securely in place. Implants are permanent, so you can expect a lifetime of a beautiful, strong restoration. The surgery to place an implant is straightforward and quick, done right in our office by Dr. Gurinsky.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants consist of several parts. The main part of the implant is known as the post. The implant is made out of titanium, which has been proven time and time again to be surgically safe to insert into the body. The implant has small pin holes at the base of the post. These holes are imperative to a process known as osseointegration, which simply refers to the bone of your jaw bonding and fusing with the implant itself. Osseointegration can take anywhere from four months to about six months to complete. Once the bone has bonded with the implant, you can expect it to offer a secure anchor for dental crowns.

What do Dental Implants Look Like?

The dental implant itself is a long post made out of titanium. The post is most often referred to as the fixture. The abutment is used as the top of the implant and holds onto the screw that is used to keep a dental crown in place. The screw, or connector, is used to hold onto the actual dental crown. The crown is made for you after the implant has healed. The only part of the implant that is not permanent is the dental crown. It is important to have this particular restoration replaced every five to 15 years.

Why Would You Want or Need an Implant?

Dental implants are beneficial for patients missing teeth or those who want to stop their dentures from continually slipping and falling out. The dental implant prevents the need for a fixed bridge or partial denture. An implant-supported denture fits better and is often more comfortable for patients. In many cases, the supported denture will even look more natural because it is kept in the mouth at all times. Dental implants are incredibly beneficial for most patients and provide the security and confidence that you need.

Dr. Gurinsky is here to provide you with a long-lasting implant that fits your oral needs perfectly. The procedure itself is ideal for most healthy adult patients. You will have a consultation prior to the actual procedure in order to discuss sedation options as well as aftercare. Your new dental implant can improve the overall look of your smile as well as making your teeth more functional.
