Are lead aprons for dental xrays a thing of the past?

My dentist recently stopped using the lead aprons and thyroid collars when they take xrays on me. How come?

Recent data has show that dental xrays do not cause genetic mutations or other diseases and that thyroid cancer is a very low risk. The American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology now recommends that the use of the lead apron be discontinued as a result. While there is probably no harm to wearing it, don’t be surprised to see dental offices no longer placing it on you for xrays.
